Short-Term Residence Permit in Turkey
The Short-Term Residence Permit is regulated under Articles 31-33 of the Law on Foreigners and International Protection (Law No. 6458). It allows foreigners to reside in Turkey for specific purposes and limited durations.
Who Can Apply for a Short-Term Residence Permit?
Foreigners meeting the following conditions can apply:
Foreigners for Scientific Research
Property Owners in Turkey
- The property must be residential and used for that purpose.
Foreigners with Business Ties or Starting a Business
- For permits longer than 3 months, supporting documents such as invitation letters may be required.
Foreigners Attending In-Service Training Programs
- Permit is granted based on training duration and provided documents.
Foreigners Arriving for Education or Exchange Programs
- Permit duration cannot exceed the duration of the education program.
Foreigners Arriving for Tourism
- Travel plans will be evaluated; supporting documents may be requested.
Foreigners Receiving Medical Treatment
- Permit will match treatment duration; insurance is required unless costs are fully covered.
Foreigners Staying Due to Legal Decisions
- Permit duration will be based on court or administrative decisions.
Foreigners Losing Family Residence Permit Eligibility
- Includes divorcees from Turkish citizens or abuse victims; they may transition to short-term permits.
Foreigners Attending Turkish Language Courses
- Permit is valid for up to 2 terms.
Foreigners for Education, Research, Internships, or Courses via Public Institutions
- Duration cannot exceed 1 year.
Foreigners Who Graduated from Turkish Universities
- Must apply within 6 months of graduation.
Foreign Investors and Their Family Members
- Up to 5-year permits for specified investment amounts.
TRNC Citizens
- Can receive permits for up to 5 years.
Duration of Short-Term Residence Permit
- Generally, permits are issued for a maximum of 2 years, except for investment and TRNC citizens.
